After the inaugural Run Up for Downs in 2013, we wanted to find ways to make the 2nd Annual Run Up for Downs even better and more special. We are ecstatic to announce that at the 2nd Annual Run Up for Downs on March 22nd, 2014 at Old Trace Park (Register today), we will have the band Trademark performing LIVE! You can check them out on Facebook by clicking here.
Now..having a live band perform is definitely exciting, but having a band that has a connection with Down syndrome…makes it even more special. The lead vocalist and frontman for Trademark, Charles Derrick, has a son, Leyton, who just so happens to also have Down syndrome. It was great to talk to Charles over the phone and hear how proud he is when talking about Leyton. Below are some words that Charles shared with us:
“On May 11th, 2012 our lives were changed forever! On that day I shed a lot of tears in self pity and feeling sorry for my son who has Down syndrome, which I knew very little about. It has now been over a year and a half and I still know little about the syndrome, but I do know enough about my son Leyton to know that I should have never felt sorry for him or us, because he was just what my wife and I needed in our lives. His joy and approach to life is something I believe we can all learn from on a daily basis. I actually feel even more blessed for having a child with Down syndrome.
I also believe Leyton is a positive influence on my family and my band (TRADEMARK). Everyone just loves for him to be around and always brightens their day. He has brought my family closer together in many ways, and makes the problems within the family seem “not so bad”. The band is also looking at the business and the future differently than before. We are proud to be able to give our time and talent for such a wonderful benefit.”
